The New Jersey Code Changed. Your Filing Date Now Matters.
The 2024 codes are in effect. For projects already in design, New Jersey’s six-month grace period creates a real decision about when to file and which code path the project will follow.
New Jersey adopted the 2024 International Building Code and related I-Codes, along with the 2024 National Standard Plumbing Code (NSPC), 2023 NEC and ASHRAE 90.1-2022 for commercial energy. These codes became operative on August 17, 2026. 1
Projects can still be filed under the previous code during a six-month transition period, provided a complete permit application and all required prior approvals are submitted. 2
What the grace period actually means
01. You have six months from August 17, 2026 to file a complete permit application and all prior approvals under the previous code. 2
02. A partial permit, such as a footing or foundation permit, does not lock the entire project to the previous code. 3
03. After the grace period, the new code editions apply to new applications and to any project that does not have a complete application and prior approvals on file. 2
Applicable codes in New Jersey
2024 IBC — International Building Code, as adopted and amended by New Jersey.
2024 NSPC — National Standard Plumbing Code, as adopted and amended by New Jersey. New Jersey’s plumbing subcode uses the NSPC, not the International Plumbing Code (IPC).
2023 NEC — National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), as adopted by New Jersey.
ASHRAE 90.1-2022 — Energy standard for commercial buildings and residential buildings other than low-rise residential. 1
What to decide now
1. Can the design be completed and coordinated in time to file a complete application?
2. Are all required prior approvals—planning, zoning and others—on track?
3. Would the project be better served by the 2024 code, for example for flexibility, use or long-term value?
4. What are the cost and design impacts of each code path?
5. Do you need to phase the work, and if so, how will that affect code applicability?
